Windows update paralyzes Linuxes again, again

I recently sat down at my desktop and booted up my machine like I do every morning. I needed to get some work done so I required a working computer. But this is not what happened. Instead I was faced with a Windows update which prevented my Linux from booting entirely, forcing me into the hell that is Windows.

This is an issue that keeps on happening with no end in sight. Will Linux ever be able to boot normally again?

Background
